The Games celebrated its 10th
Anniversary. A record 11,742 athletes participated. Speed Skater Bonnie
Blair the winningest US athlete in Winter Olympic history, (five Olympic gold
medals and one bronze), addressed the audience and lit the torch at Opening
Ceremonies. Blair surprised the crowd by climbing the steps of the West
grandstand at Daylis Stadium to ignite a line rocket that traveled across
the track and infield to ignite the torch.
Swimmer Marjorie McClean and
shooter Lonn Saunders were the Big Sky State Games Athletes of the Year.
Saunders went on to be named the National State Games Athlete of the Year.
The award was presented at the National Congress of State Games Annual
Symposium in Atlanta by USOC President Leroy Walker and Turner Sports
President, Harvey Schiller.
