Year #11 1996
The Big Sky State Games was held one week
earlier than the traditional third weekend in July to avoid conflicting
with the Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia.
Opening Ceremonies was
highlighted with an inspiring message and torch lighting by Olympic Gold
Medallist Billy Mills, the only American to win the Olympic 10,000 meters.
The athlete numbers grew to
11,742 participants in 23 sports. Road racer and former BSSG Commissioner
Debbie Magilke and John Collins, archer and long time BSSG volunteer, were
named the Big Sky State Games Athletes of the Year.
Shortly after the conclusion of
the 1996 Games Executive Director, Tom Osborne resigned to become the
fulltime Executive Director of the National Congress of State Games. Big
Sky State Games Assistant Director, Karen Sanford Gall, was named BSSG
