Year # 15 2000
The Games celebrated its 15th
Anniversary. Over 11,000 athletes participated. Three Olympic Gold
Medalists with Montana ties were special torch lighters at Opening
Ceremonies; Mike Burton - Swimming (three-time Gold Medalist) 1968 & 1972,
Pat Spurgin-Pitney - Shooting 1984, and Kendall Cross - Wrestling 1996.
A National Track & Field age
group record was set by 86-year-old Alfred Funk of
Bozeman. Funk's performance earned him the Big Sky State Games Male
Athlete of the Year. This year's Female Athlete of the Year was Kathy Aragon.
Kathy participated in Cycling, Road Race, Track & Field and ran in the
Montana Mile at Opening Ceremonies.
The Big Sky State Games
Character Counts! Scholarship was established and awarded at Opening
Ceremonies to Jenny Doely of Billings Senor High and Jeff Graham of
Chester High School who were seniors in high school (2000-2001).
The scholarship was designed to promote sportsmanship.
In May, BSSG conducted a "Learn to
Play" with
almost every sport of the Games represented. The event was free to the
public and featured hands- on demonstrations, vidoes and actual
competition.
In addition, an Athlete
Assistance Program was initiated for athletes that might not be able to
enter the Games due to expense, and a free Basketball clinic was held for
scholastic players Friday before the Finals.
