Year #2 1987

Some 4,088 athletes from 155
Montana cities and towns participated in the 1987 Big Sky State Games.
Archery, Boxing, Golf, and Table Tennis were added making 17 sports
available.
Sculptor, Lyndon Pomeroy, in
preparation for the Games, constructed a 12-foot high by 8 foot in
diameter Opening Ceremonies Torch. A satellite dish was used for the bowl,
standing it on five legs, to represent the five Olympic rings.
Stormy weather and forecasted rain
prompted the move for an indoor Opening Ceremonies at MetraPark. Judy
Morstein Martz, 1964 Olympic speedskater and one of the first Montana
females to participate in Olympic competition, administered the athlete’s
oath. 1972 Olympic Hammer Thrower, Tom Gage, also a Montanan, lit the new
torch.
