Year #3 1988
The regional concept, with the theme "For All
Montanan’s" was introduced in 1988 with basketball as a trial sport. The
goal was to host 4 regional competitions enabling more Montanans to easily
participate.
In 1988 5,292 Montana athletes
participated. Ranging from age 4 to age 86. Badminton was added. At the
time, 36 states were hosting similar events and the National Congress
selected Billings to host their annual Symposium in October.
It was an Olympic year and two
more Montana Olympians opened the Games. Shooter, Lones Wigger, Jr. from
Carter gave the oath and Biathlete, Kari Swenson of Bozeman lit the torch.
A visiting girls volleyball team from Japan joined in the parade of
athletes.
