Year #4 1989
The 1989 Big Sky State Games were an official
event of Montana’s Centennial celebration. Every medal bore the Centennial
logo. Regionals expanded with the addition of Bowling and Volleyball
competitions. Handball and Windsurfing were added. At final count the
number of participants increased to 6,901.
As Montana celebrated 100 years
of statehood, the 1989 Torch Bearer was close to celebrating 100 years of
life. Abel R. Kiviat, America’s oldest living Olympic medallist at age 97,
ignited the Games Torch. Kiviat was a gold and silver medallist in the
1912 Stockholm, Sweden Games. Opening Ceremonies was punctuated with a 60
meter race between the Game's youngest entrant, 2-year-old Tyler Wetsh, and
100-year-young Ella Beals, the oldest.
Big Sky State Games Executive
Director, Tom Osborne, was elected the second President of the National
Congress of State Games.
