Year #5 1990
Participants in the 1990 Games had the special
privilege of sitting front and center during President George Bush’s
anti-drug message to Montana. Two-time Olympic hurdle champion and
three-time Olympic medalist, Edwin Moses, added to the pageantry of Opening
Ceremonies. Moses recited the Games Oath and ignited the ceremonial torch.
The Games cracked the 7,000 mark
with 7,022 participants. Equestrian, Karate and Sporting Clays were added
to the sport index. A number of State Games records were broken, perhaps
the most spectacular was 74-year-old Manuel White’s World Record javelin
throw of 131’10". He also set the American Record in the one-kilo discus
with a toss of 132’3", and won three additional gold medals in the high
jump, hammer throw and shot put.
In February, the United States
Olympic Committee House of Delegates voted to admit the membership of the
National Congress of State Games. State Games Executive Director, Tom
Osborne was selected to serve as the NCSG representative on the USOC Board
of Directors.
