The Pan American Games event of Roller Skating was added to the State Games lineup, doubling the dozen sports that were offered in inaugural Games. At final count 11,220 athletes had made the attempt for State Games gold, a nine percent increase in participation.

Montana native, Dave Johnson, the 1992 Olympic Bronze Medal Decathlete, was the official torch lighter. National Champion Shooter and Billings Senior High graduate, Lonn Saunders, carried the torch into the stadium. Once again, the most seasoned competitor was Larry Gillingham of Trout Creek.

The eleven-time international champion Troopers Drum and Bugle Corps from Casper, Wyoming performed at the opening festivities. Five members of the Troopers were from Montana. Joe Beatty, nine-time state champion for Seeley Swan High School and Big Sky Conference champion for the University of Montana, won the Montana Mile in a record time of 4:14.4.
