Year #9 1994
The sport of Shooting added Summer Biathlon to
its list of events. The Summer Biathlon consists of a 5k run with two
shooting stops from 25 meters. Basketball reached an all time high, fueled
by eight Regional competitions in the youth divisions.
The Games topped out at 11,569
participants making it the largest State Games in the nation per capita.
In the 50th year since the D-Day
invasion, State Games organizers wanted to pay tribute to the many
Montanans who served the state and nation during World War II. Four
Montana World War II veterans carried the torch into Daylis Stadium. Steve
Lundquist, the Olympic Gold Medal swimmer, addressed the Opening Ceremonies
audience, administered the Oath and ignited the symbolic torch.
The NCSG instituted an Athlete
of the Year program sponsored by CITGO Petroleum Corp. Each state
nominated a male and female Athlete of the Year. Montana’s winners, runner
and Road Race Commissioner, Exel "Ekkie" Wedul and shooter Glen Kapitzke
enjoyed a special luncheon with Governor Marc Racicot.
